Commuting On The Safe Side

Calgary Women in Energy stresses the importance of increased vigilance when navigating the daily commute during these shortest days of the year. As we prepare to ‘fall back’ our clocks on November 1, we don’t want to fall victim to the possible dangers lurking in the additional darkness. Whether by car, public transit, or on foot, here are some tips to keep you safe when travelling at morning and night:

DRESS WITH SAFETY IN MIND:

Consider your clothing. Does your gym bag or purse leave your hands free for defense? Does your hat hinder your peripheral vision? Can you run in those shoes? Can you switch your mittens for gloves?

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS:

Stay alert as to what is going on around you. Is walking alone at night the best time to be wearing earbuds and listening to your mobile device, or playing Candy Crush?

CHANGE YOUR ROUTE:

If you keep the same itinerary everyday, it won’t be too hard for the perps to track you. Can you try walking or driving a new route home? Can you change the time you hit the gym or go grocery shopping?

PARK WITH PURPOSE:

A small adjustment in where you park could make a big difference in deterring an attacker. Can you park closer to a shuttle bus, a busy store, a hotel entrance, or a security camera?

WALK WITH PURPOSE:

Think about how a perpetrator might perceive you and your body language. Does it say “Back off!” or, “I’m vulnerable”?

DON’T ISOLATE YOURSELF:

Also, when walking at night, try to avoid empty, poorly-lit paths that may leave you vulnerable. Calgary Women in Energy is a dynamic network of professional women with integrity and the shared aspiration of positively impacting the energy industry and city of Calgary. This independent, non-profit, membership-based society is dedicated to promoting, supporting, and empowering women in the energy sector and believing it is important for everyone to work together and keep employees safe.
